Senate approves establishment of Federal University of Transportation in Daura

Nigerian Senate on Wednesday passed a bill seeking to establish a Federal University of Transportation in Daura, Katsina State.

The approval followed the debate by Senators after its general principles were read by the Senate Committee Chairman on TETfund, Ahmad Babba Kaita representing Katsina North Senatorial district.

He said the establishment of the Institution will afford Nigerian students the opportunity to access modern knowledge, emerging techniques and skills in the transport industry.

The lawmaker claimed Nigerians are behind in terms of the transport sector driven economy, hence, the University would be better positioned for capacity building and employment generation.

He emphasised that the Institution would provide the required knowledge to prospective students to enhance Nigeria’s transportation sector and make them drivers of the industry.

"The envisaged University of Transportation has immense benefits, especially in closing the huge gap in knowledge about transportation business and enhancing technical skills while ensuring technology transfer from the most developed nations such as China, USA, South Korea, etc to benefit the Nigerian transportation industry”, Kaita said.

After consideration, the bill was passed into law to establish a pioneer University of Transportation.

Gunmen abduct customs official, 9 others in Kaduna

Bandits have attacked Kofar Gayan low-cost housing estate in Zaria, Kaduna State, kidnapping a customs official, Muawiyya Gambo Turaki, his son Khalifa and eight others. Police spokesman Muhammad Jalige was yet to get details of the incident at the time of filing this report, but residents told The Nation that the bandits invaded the area around 9.00pm on Wednesday.
