ASUU: Nigerians protest prolonged strike on Twitter

Some Nigerians have taken to  Twitter  on Friday to protest the prolonged strike action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities. The ASUU strike which has now entered two months has not been met with a positive response from the Federal Government. The PUNCH  gathered some of the tweets by Nigerians who protested the worrying situation and called for an end to the strike action. NGO to mentor, prepare Kogi girl-child for success

A non-government organisation, Owe Ladies Development Initiatives, has commenced a mentorship program to ensure that Owe girl child in the Kabba metropolis of Kogi State gets the right mentor to be successful in life. This was disclosed on Sunday at a programme organised by the NGO with the theme, “The Successful Girl-Child” held at Olonijola Event Center, Kabba. Speaking at the event, the NGO President, Mrs Folashade Ann Shinkaiye, commended the commitment, enthusiasm, and determination of its members to make a difference for Owe girls. According to her, Owe Ladies Development Initiatives was an integral part of the program conceived by Kabba Development Union, an umbrella body that drives the development process of Kabba community. Don’t hand over Government College Ibadan to old students – Parents tell Makinde

Parents of students of the Government College, Ibadan, have kicked against plans by the Oyo State Government to hand over the institution to Government College Ibadan Old Boys’ Association (GCIOBA). The parents made this disclosure via a petition addressed to Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State. Our correspondent gathered that the state government has said that it has concluded arrangements to hand over the secondary school to GCIOBA led by Mr. Wale Babalakin. But, the parents have kicked against the move. The parents, in the letter signed by Prince Adeniji Adeniyi (P.T.A. Chairman, Senior School), Mr. Owosibo Olusegun, (P.T.A. The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has said the recent creation of new universities and polytechnics by the federal government is meant for the 2023 presidential campaigns. The group in a press conference at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka on Wednesday said the move amounted to politicizing university education. The federal government had recently announced the establishment of six new private universities across the country, bringing the total universities in Nigeria to about 176 universities both public and private. Addressing journalists, the Owerri zone of ASUU wondered why the government should be establishing new universities at this critical time when it is unable to properly fund the existing ones. ASUU reveals condition for schools’ resumption

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Abuja zone says there will be no resumption in public universities until renegotiated 2009 agreement is signed, implemented and the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS) deployed. The ASUU Zonal Coordinator, Dr Salawu Muhammed Lawal, made this known during a press conference at the University of Abuja in Gwagwalada on Monday. Exam malpractice: Kwara to punish erring principals

The Kwara State Government has again warned principals of both Junior and Senior Secondary Schools in the state to desist from encouraging examination malpractices in their various schools or be ready to face severe sanctions. The state Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Hajia Sa’adatu Modibbo Kawu, gave the warning during a meeting with all the principals in the state held at St Anthony Secondary School, Ilorin, the state capital. Hajia Modibbo Kawu lamented that, “despite the constant warnings from the state government on zero tolerance to examination malpractice, some principals have been indicted by the West Africa Examination Council for engaging in examination malpractice during last year’s WAEC examinations.” 'Henceforth, erring principles will not go unpunished,” she warned. Technology: Adhere To 70:30 Admission Ratio, Buhari Orders Polytechnics

President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday asked all Nigerian polytechnics to adhere strictly to the admission policy of 70:30 ratio in favour of science and technology-based programmes. Buhari said during the 20th convocation ceremonies of the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro, Ogun State. The combined convocation witnessed the graduation of 10,358 graduands in the 2019/2020 and 2020/2021, and conferment of fellowship award of the institution on Lagos West Senator, Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, aka Yayi. Oyo Technical Varsity Denies Ties With US-Based Professor Alleging Unpaid Salaries, Breach Of Contract

The management of the Technical University, Ibadan, Oyo State, has dissociated itself from claims made by United States-based Professor, Godwin Sadoh alleging non-payment of salaries and contract breach. Sadoh had alleged that Afolabi Oladapo, a former Head of Service of the Federation breached a contract he had with him when he was the acting Pro-Chancellor of the university. According to the don, he was recruited from the United States under the Nigerians in Diaspora Scheme to assist in creating a music programme that would be rooted in 21st-century music technology, for the university, which was under construction at the time.
