Monkeypox is a viral infection that manifests a week or two after exposure with fever and other non-specific symptoms, and then produces a rash with blisters that can last for a couple of weeks before usually clearing up. In 1970, during smallpox eradication efforts, there were six unvaccinated children who became the first known human cases. The first case affected a 9-month-old boy in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire). The other people, which also included three playmates, were in Liberia and Sierra Leone. It was shown to be less contagious than smallpox. More than 300 cases of human monkeypox were documented in the DRC between 1981 and 1986, with animal interaction accounting for the majority of cases.
