Ricketts family withdraws from bid to buy Chelsea, gives reasons

The Ricketts Family has pulled out of its bid to buy Chelsea Football Club from Russian-Israeli billionaire, Roman Abramovich.

Ricketts Family was one of the final four left in the process after a deadline from sellers Raine Group passed on Thursday.

However, the bidders, officially known as the Ricketts-Griffin-Gilbert Group, have now released a statement on Friday announcing their reason for withdrawal.

The statement read: “The Ricketts-Griffin-Gilbert group has decided, after careful consideration, not to submit a final bid for Chelsea FC. In the process of finalising the proposal, it became increasingly clear that certain issues could not be addressed given the unusual dynamics around the sales process.

"We have great admiration for Chelsea and its fans and we wish the new owners well.”

Recall that Abramovich had announced that he had put Chelsea up for sale, claiming that the decision was in Chelsea’s ‘best interest’.

Abramovich was sanctioned by the British government over his links with Russian President Vladimir Putin amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The Raine Group was tasked with handling the West London club sale.

Chelsea has been given a special government licence to continue operating, though under strict conditions.

Raine’s preferred bidder will have to pass English Premier League owners’ and directors’ tests, with the final step the granting of a new government licence to process the sale.

Six soldiers die, 20 injured in Mali terror attacks

Six soldiers were killed and 20 injured in simultaneous attacks targeting three army bases in central Mali Sunday, the army said. Targets in Sevare, Niono, and Bapho were all hit by “armed terrorist groups (who) used suicide vehicles packed with explosives”, the Malian army said in a statement. A group linked to the firebrand preacher Amadou Koufa claimed the attacks, according to audio sent to AFP Sunday from a source close to the suspected attackers. The group, Katiba of Macina, belongs to the Group to Support Islam and Muslims (GSIM), an Al-Qaeda-linked alliance and the biggest jihadist network in the Sahel. “On Sunday morning, the mujahideen of the Katiba of Macina struck three camps of the (Malian armed forces),” a member of the group told AFP in an audio message.
