Ekiti 2022: Thugs attacked supporters of SDP candidate, ex-Gov Oni – Police

The Police in Ekiti Command have confirmed that political thugs attacked supporters of former Governor Segun Oni.

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) flagbearer’s campaign train was targeted today in Efon Alaaye during a rally.

A statement Wednesday night by the Police Public Relations Officer, Sunday Abutu said the assailants carried guns and invaded the campaign area.

“The hoodlums came to the venue with dangerous weapons to disrupt the consultation process of the SDP candidate, Segun Oni, but our men were able to put the situation under control.

“The police has begun investigation and arrest will be made and those behind it will surely have a case to answer”, Abutu added.

Jackson Adebayo, SDP Campaign spokesman had said the gathering faced gunshots, cutlasses, sticks and stones by fierce-looking thugs at the centre of the town around 3.30 p.m.

Adebayo noted that they invaded as supporters converged at the venue to wait for Oni.

“The thugs started to shoot and attacked the SDP supporters with sticks and cutlasses. Some were badly injured and vehicles in the convoy were damaged by the thugs.”

Adebayo disclosed that the violence continued before the arrival of a detachment of police.

An NSCDC officer, who thugs attempted to snatch his gun, “was wounded, but refused to surrender his gun”, he said.

EPL: Mikel Arteta gives reason for Arsenal’s defeat to Southampton

Arsenal boss, Mikel Arteta, has given reason for his side’s Premier League 1-0 defeat to Southampton on Saturday. Southampton defeated Arsenal at St. Mary’s Stadium, thanks to Jan Bednarek’s first-half goal. The result against Southampton means Arsenal are now in the sixth position on the Premier League table with 54 points from 31 games. Speaking during his post-match press conference, Arteta said the Gunners lost against Southampton because his players failed to score against the host, adding that the opponent’s goalkeeper was also exceptional. "[It is] Difficult to explain [Why we lost against Southampton] because this is football, not basketball." "It’s decided in the boxes and for the amount of time we spent around their box we didn’t put them on the goal.” “They had an exceptional goalkeeper,” he added.
