Ondo varsity VC: Education must be skill-driven if FG means well for youths


Temi Ologunorisa, the vice-chancellor (VC) of Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology (OAUSTECH), Okitipupa, Ondo state, is advocating a skill-driven educational system in Nigeria.

According to NAN, the professor spoke on Tuesday during a visit by Akoko youths to the institution’s campus.

Ologunorisa said a skill-driven system was the best way of developing the educational sector in the country.

The vice-chancellor also said the government and other stakeholders in the educational sector must synergise for the sector to attain the 21st-century skill-driven system.

Ologunorisa stressed that the era of theories without significant practical knowledge and training had gone.

“Education must be focused, skill-driven, and sustainable to meet the 21st-century ideals, and this can only be achieved if the government and other stakeholders mean well for the teeming youths in the country,” he said.

The recently appointed vice-chancellor argued did not lobby before his emergence as VC.

“There is no problem that is insurmountable. I left my comfort zone to take up this job to help people, touch lives, and make changes,” Ologunorisa added.

“The university under my watch will introduce more academic and postgraduate programmes to grow students’ population. We will run certificate and diploma courses in data processing.

“[This is] in addition to degree courses in Basic Medical Sciences, Management Science, Marine Science and Technologies, Environmental Studies, and professional postgraduate programmes.

“We will make our students bilingual by teaching and issuing them certificates of proficiency in French Language.”

Six soldiers die, 20 injured in Mali terror attacks

Six soldiers were killed and 20 injured in simultaneous attacks targeting three army bases in central Mali Sunday, the army said. Targets in Sevare, Niono, and Bapho were all hit by “armed terrorist groups (who) used suicide vehicles packed with explosives”, the Malian army said in a statement. A group linked to the firebrand preacher Amadou Koufa claimed the attacks, according to audio sent to AFP Sunday from a source close to the suspected attackers.
